Hackney Wick Arts Strategy

A Public Art Strategy and program of Temporary and Permanent Commissions in the Olympic Fringe of Hackney Wick and Fish Island

London Thames Gateway Development Corporation

Budget £500,000

muf architecture/art with curator Vicki Lewis

Hackney Wick and Fish Island are situated within the Olympic Fringe area and have perhaps the greatest density of artist studios in the UK.  The role of the artist community in the future development of the area was explored through a curatorial strategy to ‘home grow’ public art and the initial brief was extended to include a temporary program of works as a means to enable a dialogue between all the interested parties, the artists, the planners, the residents and developers.

The first phase of six temporary commissions explicitly addressed improved social connectivity and “joining up” of currently isolated and/or disparate communities. The second phase of three permanent commissions are integrated with the urban realm improvement projects and deliver connectivity for the key routes across the area to Olympic Park.
