muf were appointed as the architects to design a 5 storey mixed use development for a private client in Hackney. The site on Whitmore Road is on the south side of Regents Canal, opposite the towpath. It is within the Kingsland Basin Designated Employment Area and Regent’s Canal Conservation Area. The commercial space will be occupied by Shoreditch Trust and is located on the ground and first floor; the 8 residential units are located on the first – fourth floor.
The building is a solid timber construction, designed and manufactured off site by a German manufacturer and overseen by the engineer. The exterior of the building clad is a terracotta mathematical tiles and oak shakes, traditional handcrafted English building materials: a direct response to the surround context and planning guidance for a conservation area.
The client sees the project as an exemplary building in terms of its sustainability. The building materials have been chosen for their environmental impact in terms of sustainability and running costs. Particular environmental design considerations include grey water harvest tank,
green wall construction, solar panels. As well as more bespoke materials, which include internal wall linings made from clay boards and clay fired mathematical tiles hung to the external elevation. The roof of which is planted with reeds to become a semi-feral meadow in this post-industrial corner of London.
